We recruited a crew; they will aboard a spaceship to Mars and probe the soil and atmosphere of the planet.

I didn’t want to probe their relationship further since I was afraid of what I might  uncover. 

He is one of the most observant and emotionally intelligent people I know, but his own flaws and faults sometimes elude him. 

The constitution is based on the highest ideals, but those tenets have eluded us. I will note, though, that we have seen some progress in recent years.

“You’ll Understand When You’re Older”

The snowy-haired pianist was weaving a poem into the air with his sturdy hands. Each touch was achingly deliberate; serenely roosted on his stool, he looked ancient. He was playing a Beethoven Sonata, one that was composed in Beethoven’s later years when he was deaf.  I was listening attentively like others seated in the concert hall when I noticed my mom crying next to me. Confused, I whispered, “Hey, what’s wrong?”  “Nothing. You’ll understand when you’re older,” she said. I was ten.  I’ve always had mixed feelings about this classic line: “You’ll understand when you’re older” (which, by the way, my parents still use on me). People frequently do things that utterly confuse others, but you’re mostly expected to explain yourself should someone probe [1]. It’s rather unacceptable to address your boss or friends by saying, “You’re not mature enough to see me.” But some parents seem to have adopted this strategy to their liking.  At the same time, age does bring with it a greater depth of understanding. For this reason, it is not uncommon to see old people dismissing the youth across time and culture, as the Greek philosopher Aristotle said: “They—young people have exalted notions, because they have not been humbled by life or learned its necessary limitations; moreover, their hopeful disposition makes them think themselves equal to great things… They would always rather do noble deeds than useful ones.. They overdo everything—they love too much, hate too much, and the same with everything else.” Admittedly, my experience does verify that people may come to see things they didn’t when they were younger. The other day, I was on my way to work, listening to a Chopin prelude performed by Seoung Jin Cho. It happened. The sea of commuters around me were gone, and I was alone in the dark. As the music gripped my heart, I felt hot tears streaming down my face. This was it. That was what’d torn apart my mother’s heart years ago.  Perhaps I’d been humbled by life. When you realize how harsh life can be, when you realize how “disappointing” the present moment can be without resting your mind on the past or the future, without the distraction of brooding or longing, there is nothing more real than the pleasure of beauty. All other things may betray you, but the heavenly sound is a certainty that exists with you there and then. Great art comforts humans as earthbound creatures.  This brings us back to my take on “you’ll know when you’re older.” With all due respect to the you-don’t-understand parents, this is a misleading statement. It assumes that children or young adults possibly cannot wrap their heads around the matter at hand. They can, even if in simpler ways, because their thoughts and emotions are equally valid. In the subway, if a kid had asked me why I was crying, I might have said, “I’ve been having a rough time, and this music is proof that life is not all that bad.” There you go.  I’d like to compare humans to rocks. When a wave hits rocks on a shoreline, it splashes on both young and old rocks. Young ones are sharp and rugged while old ones are round and even after years of erosion. Water interacts with rocks of different shapes in different ways, but it interacts regardless. Waves don’t discriminate against rocks by avoiding young boulders. Life doesn’t elude [2] young people, and so does the emotional burden that comes with it.

흰 머리의 피아니스트는 강인한 손으로 허공에 시를 짓고 있었습니다. 그 움직임은 하나하나 매우 신중했습니다. 고요히 의자에 앉아 있는 그는 무척 나이가 들어보였습니다. 그가 연주하고 있는 베토벤 소나타는 베토벤이 말년 청력을 잃은 후 작곡한 것입니다. 콘서트홀에 앉아 있는 다른 사람들처럼 귀를 기울여 음악을 듣던 저는 옆에 계시는 어머니가 눈물을 흘리시는 것을 알아차렸습니다. 당황해서 저는 속삭였습니다. "엄마, 무슨 일이에요?" "아무것도 아니야. 나이가 들면 너도 이해하게 될 거야." 어머니가 말씀하셨습니다. 그때 저는 10살이었습니다. 저는 항상 이 전형적인 말 "나이가 들면 알게 될 거야"(부모님은 아직도 저에게 이 말을 사용하십니다)에 대해 엇갈린 감정을 가지고 있었습니다. 사람들은 종종 다른 사람들을 완전히 혼란스럽게 만들어놓습니다. 하지만 누군가 이유를 캐물으면 자신을 설명할 수 있어야 합니다. 상사나 친구에게 “당신은 나를 이해할 만큼 성숙하지 못하다”라는 대답은 용납되기 어렵습니다. 그러나 어떤 부모들은 자기 좋을대로 이 전략을 사용하는 것 같습니다. 나이가 듦에 따라 이해력은 실제로 더 깊어집니다. 그렇기 때문에 그리스 철학자 아리스토텔레스가 말했듯이, 시간과 문화를 막론하고 나이든 사람들이 젊은이들을 무시하는 것은 보기 드문 일이 아닙니다. "젊은이들은 삶으로 인해 겸손해지거나 삶의 불가피한 한계를 배우지 못했기 때문에 관념만을 높이 떠받든다. 게다가 그들의 희망적인 기질은 그들 자신을 위대한 것들과 동동하다고 생각하게 만든다. 그들은 유용한 일을 하기보다는 고귀한 일을 하려고 한다. 그들은 모든 것에 지나치다. 너무 많이 사랑하고 너무 많이 싫어하며 모든 것에 있어서 마찬가지로 그렇다.” 제 경험에 비춰보면 사람들은 어렸을 때는 보지 못했던 것들을 나이가 들면 볼 수 있게 되는 것이 분명합니다. 언젠가 저는 조성진이 연주하는 쇼팽 전주곡을 들으며 출근하고 있었습니다. 바로 그때 그 일이 일어났습니다. 제 주변에 있던 수많은 통근자들은 순식간에 사라지고 어둠 속에 저 혼자 있었습니다. 음악이 제 마음을 사로잡을 때 저는 뜨거운 눈물이 얼굴을 타고 흘러내리는 것을 느꼈습니다. 바로 그것이었습니다. 수년전 어머니의 가슴을 미어지게 했던 그것말입니다. 아마도 저는 삶에서 많은 일을 겪으면서 겸손해졌을 것입니다. 인생이 얼마나 가혹한 것인지 깨달을 때, 그리고 과거나 미래에 마음을 의지하지 않고는-무언가를 곰곰이 생각하거나 갈망하는 데 정신을 빼앗기지 않고는-현재 이 순간이 얼마나 “실망스러운가”를 깨달을 때, 아름다움이 가져다주는 즐거움보다 더 현실적인 것은 없습니다. 다른 모든것이 여러분을 배신할 수 있지만, 천상의 소리는 바로 그 순간 그곳에서 여러분과 함께 존재하는 확실한 것입니다. 위대한 예술은 현실에 묶여 있는 존재인 인간을 위로해줍니다. 이것은 다시 우리를 “너도 나이가 들면 알게 될거야”라는 이야기로 돌아가게 만듭니다. “너는 이해 못해” 라는 말을 하는 부류의 부모를 최대한 고려한다고 해도 그 말은 여전히 오해의 소지가 있는 말입니다. 그 말은 어린이나 젊은이들은 현재 닥친 일들을 이해하지 못한다고 가정하기 때문입니다. 비록 단순한 방식으로라도 그들도 이해하고 있습니다. 왜냐하면 그들의 생각과 감정도 다 똑같은 생각과 감정이기 때문입니다. 지하철에서 어린아이가 내게 왜 우느냐고 물었다면 저는 이렇게 대답했을겁니다. “난 지금 힘든 시간을 겪고 있는데 이 음악은 인생은 그렇게 나쁜 것은 아니라는 걸 내게 말해주고 있어.” 이게 올바른 답이 아닐까요?  저는 인간을 돌에 비교하기를 좋아합니다. 파도가 물가로 밀려들 때 파도는 젊은 돌이나 늙은 돌이나 가리지 않고 모든 돌에 다 부딪칩니다. 젊은 돌들은 거칠고 모가 나 있지만 늙은 돌들은 오랜 세월에 걸친 침식 때문에 고르고 둥근 모양입니다. 물은 각각 다른 모양의 돌들에 각각 다른 방식으로나마 작용을 합니다. 파도는 젊은 돌을 피해가거나 함으로써 돌을 차별하지 않습니다. 인생도 젊은이들을 피해가지 않습니다. 그리고 인생에 따르기 마련인 버거운 감정들도 역시 마찬가지입니다.
