If we do our best, <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">keep our noses to the grindstone [1]<span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">, and please our bosses, then we will achieve our dreams. Despite this optimistic perspective, economic progress is out of reach for many people, even while working two jobs or overtime every day. Indeed, economic studies show it is increasingly rare for workers to climb the socioeconomic ladder in developed countries. Aside from our economic situation, we also all want to be good friends, loyal family members, and respected by our co-workers. At the same time, we are only human and, therefore, imperfect. Since modern life is hard and often unfair, we naturally look for help to improve our situations.  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Some people rely on mentors, religion, or expensive professional life coaches to guide them through life. For others, self-help books claim to provide a clear and affordable roadmap for self-improvement. Books like Steven Covey's <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:italic;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">7 Habits of Highly Effective People<span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;"> or Hal Elrod’s <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:italic;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Miracle Mornings<span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;"> lure readers in with promises that, if we just listen to the author, we can become better versions of ourselves. Self-help books usually offer advice on dealing with work-life balance, tips for improving your relationship with your boss, or prescriptions to become more “effective,” “likable,” and “a better businessperson.” Bosses often recommend these books to employees and—based on the self-help genre’s annual sales growth rate of 11%—millions more readers pick these books up on their own.  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Despite the popularity and commercial success of the self-help genre, these books may actually be doing more harm than good. As Korean philosopher Byung-Chul Han points out, these books generally promote a very specific view of a good life. Reading self-help books means that we are devoting our free time to <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">self-optimization [2]<span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;"> and efficiency, but are we really making ourselves better? From Han’s point of view, most self-help books are products of the “cult of productivity.” They make us easier to manage and more profitable for our employers, instead of really improving our lives. In fact, self-help books can actually contribute to depression and <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">burn-out [3]<span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;"> by telling us that we must always have positive attitudes and should suppress our negative thoughts and emotions. Yet how can we understand happiness without also knowing what makes us unhappy? Similarly, being told that we should always want to be better and work harder is a recipe for discontent. What’s wrong with being unproductive in our free time? For Han, the problem is that the self-help genre teaches us to always want more from ourselves and never criticize the world around us, even when that world is unfair and needs changing.  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">A new literary genre, aptly called anti-self help, has arrived to present an alternative. In 2017, Svend Brinkmann, a psychology professor from Denmark, made waves with his book <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:italic;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Standing Firm: Resisting the Self Improvement Craze<span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">. In the book, Brinkmann recommends practical strategies for a more fulfilling existence. For example, you should look for friendship instead of “networking.” Don’t worry if you miss how things used to be or if you wish the world didn’t change so quickly. Perhaps if you are feeling down and out, you should go to a museum or read a novel rather than pick up a self-help book. Brinkmann also looks to the lessons of the past and points out that “progress” and the idea that everything improves over time is a recent idea based on Christian principles, which may not be true. The drive towards more wealth, happiness, or efficiency is just setting us up for unhappiness (and to buy another self-help book). Along the way, Brinkmann weaves in lessons from Buddhism, the Stoics, and other ancient guides to living instead of relying only on contemporary sources.<span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;"> <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">The lesson taught by self-help critics like Brinkmann and Han is that we should think about what personally makes us happy and matters to us, instead of letting popular self-help books, our parents, or our bosses tell us what we want. Satisfaction and meaning can be found in sources other than work, school, or wealth. By reconsidering our goals and desires, we might find some more happiness in what we already have. And, most importantly, it is ok to be imperfect.
