Is it a smiling Buddha? The famous “I think, therefore I am” uttered by René Descartes? How about the famous School of Athens painting by Raphael?  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then you’d be correct, but only partially. See, in the modern day, many consider philosophy a useless academic discipline, at least for undergraduates and their dim job prospects. But this attitude misses some of the value of philosophy. Philosophy is not just an academic subject, but can also be a way of life, a way to resolve questions about the human condition and <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">ameliorate [1] <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">your living conditions, to better the world around and within you.  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">This may seem a broad, undefined goal to improve life. And you’d be right with that diagnosis, too. But within that generality is the beauty of philosophy: It is defined not by others, but by <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:italic;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">you<span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">. You evaluate your life, your values, and your goals, and you pursue them how you see fit. The Stoics, for example, thought happiness was fulfilled desires, a feeling that what you desire has been satisfied, and to be happy requires you to desire only what is in your power. So, the activity of other people, like their accomplishments or thoughts about you, is unrelated to your pursuit of happiness because they are not within your power; you cannot control them.  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">The American pragmatists thought that philosophical <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">inquiries [2]<span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;"> were best evaluated by their practical uses and effects—how what you think actually affects the world. The pragmatists and Stoics are just two schools of thoughts within the boundless field of philosophy, which transcends spatial and temporal boundaries. You can read various thinkers, take influence from your surroundings, traditions, and cultures, and use all of those ideas to pursue some greater good, or to believe in something wonderful. That is, you can create your own philosophy.  There’s no singular way to <span style="11pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">do philosophy; if there was, we wouldn't still be wondering if the unexamined life is worth living. In all, philosophy is, at its core, an activity, a habitual practice aimed at perpetual education and promoting wisdom and prosperity (remember, philosophy means “love of wisdom”). It’s up to you to figure out what matters to you, and how you want to live that.
