Although the stress of having to speak in English can be daunting, small talk is a skill, and like all skills, it must be refined through practice. Practicing small talk with evergreen topics can be very valuable, as you’ll improve your small talk ability, and connect with your coworkers.  <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">For starters…Start with a safe (and perhaps clichéd) topic: ask about the weather, the parking lot, sports, video games, or travel plans for the next holiday. However, you don’t have to remain on the surface level forever, which is why the most <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">benign [3] and ordinary subject starter can lead to an authentic conversation.  If nothing else, compliment someone on their appearance, or ask them how their day is going. People love a good compliment, and you’ll often receive one in return, or be similarly asked how you’ve been doing, opening the door to express yourself. <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Work-related questionsOne easy way to start a conversation at the workplace is to talk about career paths. This is a universal subject that every office worker finds relatable. However, try to avoid (implicitly) disparaging your former or current employer when you are on this subject—it wouldn't behoove you well.  Last but not least, we recommend language learners stay away from political or religious topics in the office when talking to their native-speaking colleagues. Highly sensitive topics should be dealt with tact, and this requires a firm grasp of the linguistic and cultural nuances affecting your workplace.
