Nearly a decade after Google’s Android Smartwatch platform, and almost three years after its acquisition of FitBit, Google-made wristwear is finally here. The Pixel Watch, after a pre-ordering phase that started on October 6, 2022, was released to the broader public on October 13. The new Pixel 7 smartphones debuted simultaneously, but it is the smartwatch that has stolen the <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">limelight [1]. <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Off the bat [2], the slick, minimalist design is eye-catching. The watch is on the smaller end and its case comes in one size, 41 millimeters (but the screen comes down to 29 millimeters across since the bezel is quite substantial), and is made of 80 percent recycled stainless steel. The case comes in three colors, matte black, polished silver, or champagne gold. The straps come in four colors, locking into the top and bottom of the case with an internal mechanism. The black interface disguises the bezel, and alongside the round case bottom, creates a pebble-like appearance, and the straps, seamlessly attached to the body, create an illusion that they are an extension of the case.  The first generation of Pixel Watch has been moderately well-received by tech enthusiasts. However, whether Google’s smartwatch will go on to claim meaningful market share, and whether it can leverage the company in the hardware domain, have left commentators divided, critics and approvers alike.  After Google’s first <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">foray [3] into the phone business with the Motorola Droid, the company has been struggling on the hardware front. Having seen how much Apple and Samsung profited off of hardware, Google clearly wants a share of this. Through constant partnerships and acquisitions, the company has built five hardware brands (Nexus, Chrome, Next, Pixel, and its own name), none of which are market leaders. Despite its efforts to sell more hardware over the years, Google remains an advertising company. In 2019, only about 16 percent of Google’s $38.9 billion revenue came from “other revenues,” which included Google Play sales, Google Cloud sales, and hardware sales. In 2021, Google’s parent company Alphabet saw a whopping 41 percent jump in revenue, much of which came from advertisements.  Google’s Pixel Watch is yet another attempt to strengthen its <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">foothold [4] in the hardware space. So far, the smartwatch has generated much buzz in the tech community, but unless subsequent models get adopted by folks left after the <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">receding [5] tides of early adopters, the Pixel Watch will be forgotten like many other Google hardware gadgets. For now, the Pixel Watch has room for improvement. Although Google claims that “the best of Fitbit” is built into the model, reviewers have pointed out that the Fitbit addition feels clunky as watch users have to download the Fitbit app and create an account to use it, while a separate Google Fit app remains active in the background. After a six-month trial period, many functions go behind a premium paywall. Given that Google owns Fitbit, a more frictionless incorporation would have been desirable.  Moreover, the battery life is shorter than 24 hours (despite Google’s claim that the smartwatch can run up to 24 hours) in part due to constant heart rate monitoring and GPS tracking. This means that a user has to charge the watch multiple times a day, especially if they want night-time tracking during sleep. That said, with the right improvements, the next Pixel Watch model might be able to compete with Apple and Samgsung smartwatches.
