How Has the Crown Impacted Public Perception of the British Monarchy?

The latest season covers the 1990s and focuses heavily on Diana and Charles’ marriage and divorce. Many, however, are concerned that the series has the potential to <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">skew [1] public opinion surrounding the real British royal family, especially as the events of each season creep closer to modern day.  Netflix are, no doubt, aware of this, as evidenced by the disclaimer it added to trailers for the latest season that clearly pointed out that <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">The Crown is a “fictional dramatization” that is “inspired by real-life events.” In earlier seasons, the series was praised for humanizing the British royal family and specifically Queen Elizabeth II, who was characterized in real life as being admirably <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">stoical [2].  More recent seasons, however, have arguably harmed the monarchy’s public image. They’ve focused heavily on Princess Diana, a figure who has seen a <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">resurgence [3] in popularity due to the series, and has become somewhat of an icon among younger viewers for her admirable views on human rights and humanitarian efforts. Diana was treated poorly by the British royal family, with Prince Charles, her husband, cheating on her and then divorcing her. Even at the time, the monarchy was heavily criticized for its treatment of Diana, with many feeling it failed to take care of her.  Now, these turbulent years in the monarchy’s past are being rehashed for a whole new generation, many of whom weren’t even alive when Diana died in 1997. For these younger viewers, who didn’t experience the events of the series first-hand, <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">The Crown is no doubt shaping their view of the British monarchy. Opinions surrounding the monarchy are generationally divided in the UK. In a YouGov poll from October 2022, 73% of those aged 65 or older felt that the monarchy was good for Britain, compared to just 30% of those aged between 18 and 24. <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">The Crown is by no means the only factor contributing to growing skepticism of the monarchy among younger generations: Diana’s son, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan Markle, have been very public in their criticisms of the monarchy’s racist treatment of Meghan, who was the first woman of color to marry into the British royal family.  The next season of <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">The Crown is set to cover the death of Princess Diana, one of the most shocking and disruptive events in British modern history. Even today, the incident is <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">mired [4] in controversy, with some believing that the British royal family contributed to her death because she was defaming the monarchy. When writing season 6, the showrunners of <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">The Crown will have to decide whether to reference this conspiracy, with their decision having weighty political implications either way. For many, Diana’s death is the ultimate symbol of the destructive power of the British royal family, which is at present in a very fragile state. Queen Elizabeth II’s death, scandals surrounding King Charles’ brother, Prince Andrew, and Meghan and Harry’s impending Netflix special have all hurt the monarchy’s reputation. Season 6’s dramatization of this pivotal moment in British history will no doubt have a profound impact on public opinion surrounding the institution.
