Despite her skepticism, though, the relationship between Ms. Robinson and her mentee grew, and they found themselves on a bench in Hyde Park one July evening, sharing a kiss. So begins the story of Michelle and Barack Obama. Prior to the pandemic, many people went to offices in person, spending countless hours in the physical presence of others. But, in fact, the opposite was true: following the pandemic, the number of office workers that report being or having been in a workplace romance grew to 33%.  One might think that the growth in workplace romance following mandatory isolation might be attributable to upticks of loneliness. The <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">salience [4] of mortality may have also had an impact on people’s desire to date, although no such study has yet been published on the topic.  Of workplace romances, however, a few things are certain: “experts” advise against them, countless movies, television dramas, and songs have been written about them, and they are ultimately as inevitable as anything else in life.  Professional environments often try to maintain rules regarding workplace relationships: some require <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">disclosure [5] so that team reassignments can be made. Workplace romances also end in heartbreak sometimes, which naturally can be messy for all involved. But at the end of the day, if a professional environment is one in which so many people form deeply intimate and personal relationships, what value is there in distinguishing between the professional and the personal? Aren’t relationships at the very heart of business, and are relationships not, by their very definition, personal? Work, after all, is what we do for a living.
