In South Korea, <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">bihon life and <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">honjok culture are on the rise. Bihon refers to a choice to rule out<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> matrimony, while honjok, combining letters from “solo” and “tribe” in Korean, refers to those who prefer to live alone. Although single people in developed countries tend to show less enthusiasm for the idea of marriage, the existence of these catch-all phrases is notable. As Virginia Woolf said, “Nothing really happened until it has been described.” The new descriptors—bihon and honjok—indicate a <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">seismic [1] shift in Korean culture.  The numbers are clear. The country has the lowest birthrate in the world, and it was recently reported that less than 40 percent of South Koreans between the ages of 20 and 44 were in a relationship. In 2020, the proportion of single households was 31.7%, the highest among all household types.  Reasons for going bihon fall into two major categories: marriage being either infeasible or unappealing. South Korean culture places a strong set of expectations around marriage: home ownership, inflexible gender roles, and the time and money to navigate a stratospherically-expensive education system for children. As a result, many people give up on the extravagant fairy tale that is marriage, while others focus on cultivating a fulfilling single life. This rationale may seem straightforward. However, bihon and honjok are more than just refusing marriage; they are a lifestyle, characterized by a set of beliefs. Instead of quietly avoiding marriage, <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">pursuing bihon starts with a positive assertion. It is making a vow never to enter a marriage, based on which promise one’s life <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">trajectory [2] is drawn, much like vegans who make a vow never to consume animal products and adjust their lifestyle around this choice. Bihon and honjok, then, are symptoms of a counterculture, meaning they are a reaction against mainstream culture. When strict marriage norms are perceived as <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">stifling [3], some people are bound to find an alternative route. However, if it is possible to imagine a future in which more relaxed marriage norms have replaced current ones, in that future, it might be unnecessary to assert bihon in order to exercise agency over one’s life.
