The advent of Starbucks in the early 2000s has triggered a shift in coffee culture on a global scale. The company has demonstrated new ways in which artisanal coffee shops could be a part of our day-to-day lives. The unique space and ambiance of Starbucks have been a big draw, and consumers visit its shops for so many reasons—to hang out with friends, occasionally work from wherever, or read somewhere that is not their home. Ever since Starbucks opened its first store in Seattle, the coffee chain has become people's third most-visited place after their home and office. Then came the next wave of specialty coffee brands: Blue Bottle and Philz Coffee have focused on preserving the unique taste of coffee beans from nature, branding themselves as Indie shops. Although, compared to Starbucks, their menu items tend to be 20 to 30 percent more expensive, they have successfully differentiated themselves to catch the eye of consumers in their 20s and 30s. A recent survey reflects this trend. More than 50 percent of office workers consume at least two cups of coffee a day and spend, on average, 120,000 to 150,000KRW (more than 100$) every month on coffee. Habitual consumption accounts for 20.7 percent of this intake, while 15.5 percent of the respondents reported that they drink coffee to chat with their coworkers: these data point to the fact that coffee has become a staple drink. However, most respondents said coffee consumption was straining their budgets and that they were trying to reduce related expenses by using affordable coffee brands, cafes in their office buildings, or drip-bag coffee. What does coffee mean to you?
