[The following is a New York Times article, revised specifically for Ringle audiences.] I’m a lifelong extrovert who readily establishes and relishes casual contacts with people I encounter during daily life: while walking my dog, shopping for groceries, even sweeping my sidewalk. These ephemeral connections add variety to my life, are a source of useful information, and often provide needed emotional and physical support. Equally important, they nearly always leave me with a smile on my face. The benefits I associate with my casual connections were reinforced recently by a fortuitous find. I stumbled upon a book in my library called “Consequential [2] Strangers: The Power of People Who Don’t Seem to Matter ... But Really Do.” Published 11 years ago, this enlightening tome [* “tome” humorously refers to a scholarly book] explores the natural effects of so-called weak ties that people have with others in their lives: the barista who fetches [1] their coffee, the person who cuts their hair, the proprietor of the local market, the folks they often see at the gym or train station. In fact, casual connections with people encountered in the course of daily life can give people a feeling that they belong to a community, which is a basic human need. The book explains that consequential strangers are as vital to our well-being, growth, and day-to-day existence as family and close friends. Consequential strangers anchor us in the world and give us a sense of being plugged into something larger. They also enrich our lives by offering us opportunities for novel experiences. They are vital social connections—people who help you get through the day and make life more interesting. My tendency to “chat up” total strangers I meet in the course of just living has resulted in a slew of acquaintances who have filled my days with pleasantries, advice, information, needed assistance and, most important of all, a valuable sense of connections to people who share my environment. One of the author’s research has also shown that people who are more socially integrated are also more physically active. Consequential strangers also help your brain, she said, because “conversations are more stimulating than with people you know well.” A fellow researcher in the field, Katherine Fiori, has found that activities that foster “weaker ties” than are formed with family and close friends foster greater life satisfaction and better emotional and physical health. “The greater the number of weaker ties, the stronger the association with positive feelings and fewer depressed feelings,” Fiori said in an interview. In general, people do better when they have a more diverse group of people in their lives.  Living in my Brooklyn neighborhood, I encounter people in my extended network of friends and acquaintances every day. But in my country house, especially during the dark, cold days of early spring, I would be far more isolated. Walking my dog and riding my bike, I would meet almost no one else on route, deprived of conversations with the many “consequential strangers” I encounter daily during my outdoor excursions in Brooklyn. As the author wrote, “Where we live, work, shop, and mingle has everything to do with the weak ties we cultivate, and therefore our quality of life.” As they described a central theme of their book, “Casual acquaintances inspire us to venture beyond our comfort zones.” And until we do, we’ll never know what we might gain from relationships with “people who don’t seem to matter.”

[“낯선 사람과 이야기함으로써 얻을 수 있는 것들”이라는 제목의 뉴욕타임즈 기사 수정편집본입니다]  일평생 외향적인 성격을 가진 저는 개를 산책시키거나, 장을 보러 가거나, 집앞 길을 청소하는 것 같은 일상 중에 만나게 되는 사람들과 기꺼이 가벼운  인간관계를 만들고 즐깁니다. 이렇게 가벼운 인간관계들은 제 삶을 다채롭게 할 뿐만 아니라, 유용한 정보를 얻을 수 있게 도와주고, 종종 저에게 필요한 정서적 또는 물리적인 도움을 주기도 합니다. 그리고 그만큼 또 중요한 사실은, 거의 대부분의 경우 이러한 사람들이 저를 웃게 만든다는 것입니다.  이렇게 가벼운 인간관계에서 얻는 이점이 있다는 사실 최근의 운 좋은 발견으로 더 분명해졌습니다. 제 서재에서 “친하지는 않지만 중요한 사람들: 겉으로는 안 그래 보여도 실제로는 큰 의미를 지닌 사람들의 힘”이라는 책을 우연히 발견한 것입니다. 11년전 출판된 이 학구적인 책은 커피를 타주는 바리스타, 머리를 관리해주는 미용사, 동네 가게 주인, 헬스장이나 기차역에서 자주 보는 사람들 등 소위 가벼운  인간관계가 주는 자연스러운 효과에 대해서 탐구합니다.  사실, 일상생활에서 접하는 가벼운 인간관계는 우리에게 인간의 기본적인 욕구인 소속감을 제공해주기도 합니다. 이 책은, 친하지는 않지만 의미 있는 인간관계가 건강하고 행복한 삶을 가능하게 하고, 우리를 성장하게 하며, 우리가 일상생활을 지속하는데 가족이나 친구만큼 중요하다고 말합니다. 이러한 사람들은 우리가 세상에 뿌리를 내리게 하여, 개개인이 더 큰 무언가에 연결되어 있다는 생각도 하게 해줍니다. 또한, 새로운 경험을 할 수 있는 기회를 제공하여 줌으로써 우리의 삶을 풍요롭게도 합니다. 이들은 우리가 하루를 살아가고 인생을 더 즐겁게 만드는 데 도움을 주는 중요한 사람들입니다.  이렇게 잘 모르는 사람들과 “수다를 떠는” 습관은 저에게 하루하루 기쁨과 조언, 정보와 도움을 주는 수많은 지인들을 만들어주었고, 무엇보다도 요즘처럼 반 강제적으로 고립되어 살아가는 시기에 생활반경을 공유하는 사람들과 매우 의미 있는 유대감을 형성시켜 주었습니다. 저자의 한 연구결과에 따르면, 사회적 소속감이 높은 사람들이 육체적으로 더 활동적이라고 합니다. 저자는 가벼워 보이나 의미 있는 인간관계에서 일어나는 대화가 우리가 잘 아는 사람들과의 대화보다 뇌를 더 자극한다고도 말합니다. 같은 분야의 유명한 학자인 Katherine Fiori는 가벼운 인간관계가 가족 또는 친구들보다 인생의 만족감을 더 높여주고 정서적 육체적 건강에도 더 긍정적인 효과를 불러일으킨다는 사실을 발견하였습니다. 저자는 “가벼운 인간관계의 숫자가 늘어날수록 긍정적인 감정을 더 많이 느끼게 되는 반면 우울한 감정은 덜 경험합니다”라고 인터뷰에서 밝힌 바 있습니다. 일반적으로 사람들은 더 다양한 부류의 사람들과 어울릴 때 더 잘 삽니다.  저는 브루클린에 살면서 친구나 지인을 통해 알게 된 사람들을 매일 마주칩니다. 그러나 이른 봄마다 어둡고 추운 날씨가 계속되는 제 시골 별장에 머물 때면 혼자 보내는 시간이 더 많아지는 경향이 있습니다. 개를 산책시키고 자전거를 타면서 오고 가는 길에 아무도 만나지 않고, 브루클린에서 밖에 나다니며 소위 “친하지는 않아도 실제로는 의미 있는” 사람들과 일상적으로 마주치며 나누던 대화가 고갈되곤 합니다.  저자 역시 “우리가 사는 곳, 일하는 곳, 쇼핑하는 곳, 다른 이들과 어울리는 그 어느 곳에서도 가벼운 인간관계가 새로이 생겨나고 이는 곧 우리의 삶의 질로 직결된다”고 말합니다. 이 책의 핵심 주제가 이야기하듯, “가볍게 아는 지인들이 우리로 하여금 안전지대를 벗어나 새로운 도전을 하게끔 영감을 줍니다”. 그리고 이를 실제로 경험하게 되었을 때가 되서야 비로소 우리는 “겉으로 보기에 별로 중요해보이지 않는 사람들”과의 인간관계로부터 우리가 무엇을 얻을 수 있는지 깨닫게 될 것입니다.
