Shakespeare’s poetry and plays hold a special place in many English-speaking nations. While references to Shakespeare in pop culture speak to his influence, they might be too culturally ingrained to even be noticeable. Fleeting comments like the one in Beauty and the Beast, “There never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo,” permeate modern movies and books. In recognition of his cultural significance, Shakespeare’s plays are also required readings [3] for students in many English-speaking nations. Why, then, is Shakespeare still taught in the classroom? And why has he remained influential into the 21st century? Four centuries have passed since William Shakespeare lived and wrote. And yet, Shakespeare’s plays are required reading for middle and high school students in many English-speaking nations around the world to this day. For most students, Shakespeare’s works are very challenging to read, as the English language has changed significantly since Shakespeare’s time. Some popular editions of Shakespeare’s works, such as No Fear Shakespeare, include two versions of the text: the original text, and a modern English “translation” to help readers to better understand Shakespeare’s language. Why do schools continue to teach Shakespeare’s plays despite their difficulty?  William Shakespeare is widely regarded as the most important writer in the English language. Yet, he was just one of many playwrights working in the competitive theatrical market of Renaissance London. In fact, he would have been surprised by his posthumous [2] fame. While his plays were popular during his lifetime, other playwrights such as Christopher Marlowe were more highly regarded. This contrast begs the question: Why have Shakespeare’s works endured the test of time, when plays written by many of his rivals haven’t? <ol style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-inline-start:48px;"><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:decimal;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">Timeless Themes </li></ol> A work of literature generally reflects the period of time in which it was written. Authors often discuss contemporary issues and concerns in their writing, and Shakespeare was no exception. His plays are full of references to the political debates, major events, and well-known figures of his time, which would have been of interest to his audiences. And yet, Shakespeare also addressed a number of topics and themes which are regarded as universal, and which reveal timeless aspects of human nature. In the works of Shakespeare, we confront the pains of unrequited love, the sorrows of loss and mourning, the fear of death and mortality, the dangers of pride and ambition, and the injustices of kings and tyrants. Many of these themes are just as important to us today as they were in Shakespeare’s time. In fact, shortly after Shakespeare’s death, a rival playwright named Ben Jonson eulogized [4] him with words which still ring true: “He was not of an age, but for all time!”  <ol style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-inline-start:48px;" start="2"><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:decimal;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">Open to interpretation </li></ol> Over the past four centuries, students, scholars, and audiences have continued to debate the meanings of Shakespeare’s works. Different readers find different meanings in his plays, and this complexity is another reason why he is still so widely read and taught. Shakespeare wrote in a period of time when discussing political matters very openly could be very dangerous. After all, to offend the Queen could be a fatal mistake, and many other writers during Shakespeare’s time were imprisoned for offending royal or religious authorities. Shakespeare was generally careful not to pick a “side” in the various religious and political debates of his time, and he treats his characters, both kings and beggars, priests and sinners, with understanding rather than judgment. For this reason, readers with very different opinions and perspectives can appreciate his plays. George Dawson, a preacher and literary critic, summarized the unbiased nature of Shakespeare’s writing well:  “The fact is, Shakespeare was not sectarian; he pleaded nobody's mission, he stated nobody's cause. He has written with a view to be a mirror of things as they are; and shows the office of the true poet and literary man, which is to recreate the soul of man...” - George Dawson, Shakespeare and Other Lectures <ol style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-inline-start:48px;" start="3"><li dir="ltr" style="list-style-type:decimal;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;" aria-level="1">Influence and Adaptation </li></ol> Because of Shakespeare’s long-standing [1] popularity, his works have been referenced by other writers, artists, and philosophers for centuries. Some of Shakespeare’s most famous lines, (“To thine own self be true,” “It was Greek to me,” “to be or not to be,” “Brevity is the soul of wit”) have even been incorporated into everyday English. This is another reason why his works are so often taught in the classroom: because Shakespeare’s influence is so widespread, students must be familiar with Shakespeare in order to understand the many works influenced by him. In fact, Shakespeare’s works have been adapted into film 294 times! The film-director Orson Welles, who filmed adaptations of both Macbeth and Othello, once joked that “We now sit through Shakespeare in order to recognize the quotations!”  Shakespeare Today:  Recently, some middle and high schools have considered removing Shakespeare’s works from the curriculum. Teachers at one high school in Auckland, New Zealand, have argued that works by contemporary writers are more relevant to the lives and interests of students than plays written 400 years ago. Still, Shakespeare’s place in the English curriculum is altogether quite secure. FiveThirtyEight, a website that analyzes opinion polls and other public data, found that Shakespeare’s works have been assigned over 10,000 times in college classrooms in the United States since data has become available, in fields ranging from psychology to political science. It seems likely that Shakespeare will continue to be the focus of discussion, analysis, and debate throughout the 21st century.
