Disney Plus (Disney+) is a streaming service that features a growing on-demand archive [1] of films and TV shows from Disney, Pixar, and Marvel. The platform is the exclusive home of culturally iconic content, and the entire back catalog of The Simpsons and The Mandalorian—a Star Wars spin-off—are just two examples.   Disney+ was launched in the US by the entertainment titan Walt Disney Co. in November 2019 and now is a sub-segment of the company’s Direct-to-Customer (DTC) unit that operates streaming services, including Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+, and Hotstar. In May 2021, the DTC unit’s second quarter (Q2) financial report reflected its quarter-on-quarter growth*, recording $4B in revenue, a 59% increase; Disney+’s growth contributed to this performance as its number of subscribers hit 103M compared to 33M last year. All in all, Disney+ has outperformed [2] its expectations as it was initially aiming for 90M subscribers by 2024. CEO Bob Chapek now says that the platform can hit 260M subscribers within that time frame—200M is Netflix level. *A quarter-on-quarter comparison compares two figures from the same quarter in consecutive years. In the passage, the comparison is between Q2 FY2020 and Q2 FY2021. However, Disney+’s subscriber growth is slowing like Netflix’s. While adding more than 100M users in less than two years is impressive, analysts had projected a more ambitious number for Q2 2021: 109M. This disappointing subscriber addition resembles Netflix’s last quarter that saw fewer than 4M new subscribers. Although Disney is more about quality than quantity, slow growth could be more worrying if it continues because the company charges far less for Disney+ than Netflix charges its average customer. If you’re going to have slumping growth, you want your customers paying as much as possible. This concern is backed by numbers. Disney+ saw a 29% drop in its average monthly revenue per subscriber, or ARPU, from $5.63 in Q2 2020 to $3.99 in Q2 2021. Netflix’s ARPU last quarter in the U.S. and Canada was $14.25 per month—up 9% from a year ago. Disney, for its part, explained that this falling ARPU is because of Disney+Hotstar. Disney+Hotstar is a combo subscription plan the company has in India, including Disney+ and the local streaming service, Hotstar; And India suspending the Indian Premier League (IPL)—a cricket match—amidst the raging pandemic hurt the combo service’s ad revenue. Disney’s Hulu video-on-demand service has a higher ARPU— $12.08 per month, but its growth was negligible, up just 2 cents per month from a year ago.  At the same time, interpreting Disney+’s performance should be done in the context of the Walt Disney company. Disney+’s growth could cannibalize [3] other segments of the business. The cannibalization effect in marketing occurs when a new product reduces the sales of another product of the company. For example, releasing films on Disney+ and in theaters simultaneously can hurt cash flow from movie ticket sales. In 2020, Disney decided to skip the theatrical release of “Mulan” for Disney+ premier, which emphasizes the studio’s increased reliance on the streaming platform when most of their business had been crippled by the pandemic. Bringing a high-profile release like “Mulan” to homes incentivizes people to sign up for Disney+ but forgoes [4] profits from the Content Sales/Licensing and Other segment.  Of course, giving up revenue from Disney’s film and television output to form a more direct relationship with customers could be beneficial in the long run.  In short, the Q2 2021 report of Disney was met with mixed reactions about its subscriber growth and Disney+’s role in the Disney corporation.
