매년 기다려지는 휴일!

The classic American holiday of Thanksgiving entails a turkey and some American football. Families come together and give gratitude, sometimes to religious figures, oftentimes to friends and family. Appropriately, the Friday following this holiday is the busiest shopping day in the United States, one in which consumers spend their hard-earned cash and trample [1] each other (sometimes literally to death) in an attempt to be the first to get their hands on the best deals of the year (just in time for Christmas).  The name, “Black” Friday, is said to come from a common business expression. To be “in the red” would mean a business has negative earnings; conversely, being “in the black” meant that a business is financially sound. However, the origin story seems to be a bit darker, as the term has been linked to use by the police in the 1960s, to describe heavy traffic and foot flow following Thanksgiving. Regardless, following its initial use, it quickly grew into a consumer “holiday”; the rest, as they say, is history [2].  Having grown up in an immigrant family in the heart of the US, I see Black Friday like any other American holiday: it is something that I am eager to observe each year. Different from other holidays, it requires getting up at the crack of dawn, earlier than even a typical school day. There’s something ethereal [3] about traveling in a car with your family before the sun rises to wait outside what usually serves as a grocery store. What’s even more unsettling is to see store parking lots all through town packed with cars, people spilling out into the streets, waiting for the opening moment.  Retail store workers will likely hold another perspective on the “holiday,” of course, as is understandable. For them, it is another day, one that doesn’t, but increasingly should, come with hazard pay. Rows and rows of carefully curated aisles will be ravaged [4], shelves swept clean, or at the very least, unrecognizably disordered. In the meantime, the retail workers are forced to become arbitrators of justice, suddenly responsible for defusing scenes where adults have ripped toys from the hands of children (so that their own children, perhaps, might enjoy them). They—retail workers on Black Friday—witness humanity immediately following a day of gratitude: that is to say, they see us as we truly are.  Black Friday is a reminder of the world that we have built; it is a reminder of how far we have come; and it is a representation of one of mankind’s most beautiful paradoxes.

미국의 대표적인 명절인 추수감사절은 칠면조와 미식축구가 함께합니다. 가족들은 함께 모여서 때로는 그들이 믿는 종교적 존재에게, 때로는 친구들과 가족들에게 감사를 표합니다. 이에 걸맞게, 추수감사절 다음날인 금요일은 미국에서 가장 복잡한 쇼핑의 날입니다. 소비자들이 (크리스마스에 맞춰서) 그해의 가장 좋은 세일 기회를 잡기 위해 힘들게 번 돈을 소비하고 서로를 짓밟는 (때로는 문자 그대로 죽기도 하는) 날입니다. “블랙” 프라이데이라는 이름은 일반적인 비즈니스 표현에서 왔다고 합니다. "적자(빨간 숫자)"라는 것은 사업이 마이너스 수익을 냈다는 것을 의미하고 반대로 "흑자(검정색 숫자)"라는 것은 비즈니스가 재정적으로 건전하다는 것을 의미합니다. 그러나 원래의 유래는 좀 더 어두운 것 같습니다. 이 용어는 1960년대에 경찰들이 추수감사절 이후의 극심한 교통 체증과 행인들의 흐름을 설명하기 위해 사용했었기 때문입니다. 어쨌든 그 이름이 사용되기 시작한 이후 그것은 소비자의 "휴일"로 빠르게 성장했습니다. 그 나머지는 여러분이 아시는 바와 같습니다. 미국 중심부의 이민자 가정에서 자란 저는 블랙프라이데이를 여느 미국의 휴일처럼 생각합니다. 매년 꼭 지키고 싶은 휴일입니다. 이날은 다른 휴일과는 달리, 심지어 평소 학교가는 날보다 더 일찍 꼭두새벽에 일어나야 합니다. 해가 뜨기 전에 가족과 함께 차를 타고 가서 평소에는 식료품을 사러 가는 가게 밖에서 기다리는 것, 거기에는 미묘하고도 비현실적인 뭔가가 있습니다. 저를 더 불안하게 만드는 것은 시내 어디를 가나 차들이 가득찬 주차장과, 가게가 열리기를 기다리며 거리로 쏟아져 나오는 사람들을 보는 것입니다.  소매점 직원들이라면 이 "휴일"에 대해 또다른 관점을 가지겠고, 그것은 당연히 이해할 만합니다. 이날은 그들에게는 위험 수당이 지급되어야 할만한 날입니다. 아직 그렇지는 않지만, 점점 더 그 필요성이 늘어나고 있으니까요. 세심하게 줄지어 정돈되어 있던 통로들은 다 파손되고 선반 위의 물건들은 싹 쓸려 나가거나 거의 알아볼 수 없을 정도로 엉망이 될 것입니다. 또한 소매점 직원들은 졸지에 정의의 중재자가 되어야 합니다. 어른들이 아이들의 손에서 장난감을(자기 아이들이 받으면 좋아할 것 같은 장난감을) 빼앗는 일이 벌어지는 상황을 잘 처리해야 하는 일까지 갑자기 맡게 되기 때문입니다. 블랙 프라이데이의 소매점 직원들은 서로 감사하는 마음을 전하는 날 직후 인간성을 목격합니다. 즉, 우리의 참모습을 보게 되는겁니다.  블랙 프라이데이는 우리 인간이 만든 세상을 다시 한번 상기시켜줍니다. 우리가 어떤 상태에 있는지 일깨워줍니다. 그리고 그것은 인류의 가장 아름다운 역설 중 하나를 그대로 보여줍니다.
