When a stranger says, “trust me,” your first instinct is to not. Trust needs proof, and in a person you don’t know, not much information can be found to build trust.  Lack of trust means less engagement, which is why we avoid following strangers or entrusting them with our belongings. If I told you to unlock your phone and hand it off to an unfamiliar face, you would panic. That sense of panic would only be greater were you asked to give access to your house not your phone. The thought of a stranger casually entering your apartment and snuggling down in your bed almost feels absurd.  Airbnb’s global success seems counterintuitive in this context. The company’s platform connects hosts who want to rent their houses with guests who are looking for accommodation. For Airbnb’s co-founders, Joe Gebbia and Brian Chesky, relying on trust between strangers was a monumental challenge to overcome before realizing their vision of making affordable rentals available.  In 2007, San Francisco roommates Gebbia and Chesky were struggling to pay their monthly rent. The desire to make their living space more affordable sparked the concept of an “Air Bed and Breakfast,” a concept to turn their San Francisco loft into a space where people could spend the night. For a small fee, guests would receive an air mattress and free breakfast the next morning, all the while providing Gebbia and Chesky some extra cash to offset their monthly rent. Gebbia and Chesky quickly realized that their “Air Bed and Breakfast” idea could revolutionize the hotel and home renting industry. They partnered with their old roommate, Nathan Blecharczyk, to turn this into an official business. In 2008, they reached out to 15 investors in hopes of receiving funding to launch their company — they were rejected by 8 and ignored by the other 7. In 2009, “Air Bed and Breakfast” became “Airbnb” when Paul Graham, a venture capitalist, saw potential in the company and invited the scrappy entrepreneurs to join the prestigious startup group, Y Combinator. This was the turning point that allowed Airbnb to grow into the company that it is today. Today, Airbnb is worth $75 billion and lists rentals in over 220 countries and regions. While the company has earned itself an impressive title, its journey was that of resolving apprehension [1] from users due to its unprecedented reliance on trust between strangers. For property hosts and guests alike, Airbnb has left some people with experiences that question the reliability of a business model rooted in trusting strangers.  Since its launch, Airbnb has received complaints about rentals not looking as good as promised in the online pictures, sometimes appearing more run-down or dirtier than advertised. Some users have indicated that the neighborhood of their Airbnb stay left them feeling unsafe, and in extreme cases, robberies or home invasions during stays have been reported. Airbnb hosts have also had parallel [2] feelings about letting strangers stay in their property. The most common complaint from hosts is that their renters left the property dirty, or with damaged or stolen items.  Therefore, it has been the primary focus of Airbnb to address the issue of trust. Over the years, systems to ensure safety, connection, and support have been introduced. Today, the company uses the latest technology to assess the risk of each reservation before anything is confirmed. In the US, it runs background checks on every host and guest, and the website offers secure payment and messaging tools.  Airbnb also built the Trust and Safety team to offer 24/7 assistance in 11 different languages. With all these measures, the platform has established transparency between hosts and renters, stripping a deep-rooted societal fear of trusting people we don’t know. Every night, over two million people stay in an Airbnb rental property — an astounding feat [3]. Airbnb is now a global brand worth more than the 3 largest hotel chains combined. The answer to whether Airbnb succeeded in building trust by “ensuring people don’t feel like strangers” may be a resounding yes.
