There is a good reason for this, and with Paul Graham’s “<a href="http://www.paulgraham.com/makersschedule.html" style="text-decoration:none;"><span style="color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:underline;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;text-decoration-skip-ink:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Maker’s Schedule, Manager’s Schedule</a>,” it’ll all make sense. Graham is a computer scientist and a venture capitalist. In his essay, he explains that programmers hate meetings so much because meetings cost them more.  According to him, people run on different types of schedules. There is the manager’s schedule, which is for bosses. Most powerful people are on this schedule represented by the traditional appointment book. The day is divided into hourly intervals, and although several hours can be blocked off for a single task, the baseline [1] is that you’re doing something different every hour.  On the other hand, there is the maker’s schedule. Makers are people like writers and programmers. Since one or two hours is not nearly enough to get started on their creation, their time unit is at least half a day— this is the minimum threshold given that some people hide out in writing retreats. To makers, a single task or meeting thrown at them can break up their day into tiny slots that are not enough to do anything. It doesn’t cause makers to smoothly switch from one thing to another but changes the mood of the day. What is merely a matter of practicality for managers can, in the world of Graham, blow a whole day for makers.  The two types of schedule work fine independently. The problem begins when the two meet. People of power, who are typically on a manager's schedule, can command others to resonate on their frequency at their fingertips. And if this happens, makers can’t do their work well. Graham adds, “...the smarter ones restrain themselves, if they know that some of the people working for them need long chunks of time to work in.” The clash doesn’t only happen between two people using their time differently. It also occurs when the same person is given tasks of incompatible nature — a role of both managing and making.  However, there are partial solutions to this tension between the manager’s and maker’s schedule. Makers can block off one or two days in a week to attend to logistics and meetings. Managers can be more cognizant [2] of what a “threat” even a simple meeting can be to makers. After all, growth happens where the two different worlds meet.

"그렇기 때문에 똑똑한 관리자들은 그러기를 자제합니다. 만약 자기 직원들 중 일하는 데 긴 시간이 필요한 사람이 있다는 것을 안다면 말이죠." 그레이엄이 덧붙입니다. 이런 충돌은 시간을 다르게 사용하는 두 사람간에서만 일어나는 것이 아닙니다. 한 사람에게 양립할 수 없는 서로 다른 성격의 임무(관리와 창작의 업무)가 주어질 때도 발생합니다.  하지만 관리자의 일정과 창작자의 일정 사이의 충돌을 부분적으로나마 해결할 수 있는 방법은 있습니다. 창작자들은 기획이나 회의를 위해 일주일에 하루이틀을 빼놓을 수 있습니다. 관리자는 간단한 회의조차 창작자들에게 "위협"적인 요소가 될 수 있다는 것을 더 잘 인식하고 유의할 수 있습니다. 결국 서로 다른 두 세계가 만나는 곳에서 성장과 발전이 일어납니다.
