Linguistic formality communicates power dynamics between groups and individuals. Yet, the existence or lack of a certain linguistic feature (e.g. formal speech levels) is not necessarily an indicator of how hierarchical a society or culture is. However, wherever there are differences in familiarity, power, or status, languages will find a way to express them.
