In his book "The Art of Procrastination: A Guide to Effective Dawdling, Lollygagging and Postponing," psychologist John Perry talks about the positive impact procrastination and mindful time-wasting can have on creative work. However, in a busy world where not only our bosses, but productivity gurus on social media, professors in MBA programs, and the world’s top entrepreneurs share their productivity routines, it is difficult to not feel guilty about a lazy Sunday afternoon on the couch watching Netflix. This is not to say that most of us spend our Sunday afternoons planning for the week ahead, managing our portfolio, and working on our own business while working 8 to 5 during the week. In fact, most of us probably <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">kick back [1] and watch Netflix. Yet, we still feel guilty about it. But why do we feel guilty? If you are the kind of person who has high ambitions and exciting goals in life, here is a possible answer: It might be because you feel like every minute you spend doing something that does not directly contribute toward achieving those goals is a minute wasted. The truth is, whatever you are doing right now, there are a thousand other things that could bring you just a little bit closer to your dreams. That is why productivity advice is so popular nowadays. And, <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">contrary to [2] many of the dieting tips you might find on social media, most productivity advice is probably pretty useful, too. The problem is that no matter how productive you are and how well you manage to optimize your workflow, you will eventually get tired, physically and mentally. In his book, Perry observes that the more important decisions people make during the day, the more mentally exhausted they become, and the less critical thinking they apply when making those decisions. This phenomenon is called “decision fatigue” and it is a very well-established concept in the cognitive sciences. A famous example of the effects of decision fatigue is the following observation of <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">parole [3] judges by researchers Shai Danziger, Jonathan Levav, and Liora Avnaim-Pesso. The researchers analyzed more than 1,100 decisions over a one-year period and found that the judges significantly granted more paroles in the morning hours of the day than in the evening. In a subsequent experiment, the researchers reduced the number of parole cases each judge had to rule per day. The results were that the judges granted parole to a significantly higher number of afternoon cases compared to before. The conclusion was that judges seem to make more consistent decisions if they make fewer decisions. So, how does procrastinating and time-wasting fit into this picture? Even if you are not a judge, you constantly make decisions when you are participating in a zoom meeting, when you are building a slide deck for a client meeting, or when you are researching a report for your degree. According to Perry, procrastinating allows you to reduce the number of decisions that you make on that particular day. At the same time, simply by thinking about the task that you are procrastinating, you are working on it mentally, exploring ideas without committing to them and evaluating options without deciding on them. By actively procrastinating, that is by allowing your brain to think about work without working, you allow yourself to make better decisions today and in the future. So, the next time you spend a lazy Sunday afternoon watching your favorite series on Netflix, don’t feel guilty about not working on that project you have been meaning to start or not practicing that client presentation on Wednesday. Let your mind wander, see if the show you are watching can’t inspire you a bit, and try to appreciate that you recharge your batteries so that you can make better decisions tomorrow.
