Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to whether you should matriculate at a school—but your career goals, the school’s location, and cost of attendance, taken together, can give you a general sense of the value of attending that school.  Hypothetically, let’s say you are offered a seat at a law school. Ask yourself what legal jobs you want; will said [1] school give you a decent chance of getting those jobs? Law school rankings are often used as a shortcut to gauge potential employment outcomes. Reducing a school’s worth to its ranking, however, is an overly simplistic view. Look into the school’s employment statistics, and see what percentage of the most recent graduating class was employed. What percentage of them secured a job in a law firm with more than 250 employees? See the 75th, 50th, and 25th percentile salaries of said class. The placement [2] data will give you a better understanding of the degree’s economic strength.  An equally important consideration is the location of the law school. Some regional schools, despite their low national rankings, punch above their weight for their region. For students who know where they want to practice, regional law schools can be an economically viable option, especially if they offer decent financial aid packages. Speaking of which, among the thorniest [3] yet most important of issues is that of financing your legal education. This question carries more weight for those planning to take out loans for tuition and living expenses for two reasons: high student loan interest rates and future obligations. Given that interest rates of federal student loans range from 5 to 6%, carrying a $200,000 debt for 10 years can amount to paying in interest about 30% of the principal. Moreover, borrowing big sums of money to finance hefty tuition is essentially signing a contract to give up your financial freedom for the following years.  Horror stories are passed down from prior generations of law students and lawyers: people hated their jobs and regretted taking out loans. These stories are used to caution aspiring lawyers against law school unless they get a full scholarship–go to law school for free so that you can quit law! But the discussion should be more nuanced. I see it this way–pick your poison. Choosing which law school to attend comes down to understanding the risks you’d be taking by making that decision. There are different factors you should consider, including your career goals, personal finances, and location. You might have to assume higher risks in some of these factors by choosing one school over another and vice versa. Make your own educated decision, even if it means turning down Yale for Pepperdine or leaving behind a scholarship at Cornell to pay sticker at Columbia.
