Starbucks is known for its lofty wooden interior and high-quality customer service. Their beverages are on the expensive end, but a Starbucks regular would say there are several things the coffee brand does right that its competitors simply miss, these small differences being the reason Starbucks stands out. Although it is a fast food chain that sells (often sugary) drinks like the Frappuccino, well-trained baristas called “partners,” the office-themed design, and the Starbucks mobile app all contribute to the making of a one-of-a-kind [1] experience. What is less known is that Starbucks actually operates like a bank. From October through December in 2020, 3 billion dollars were loaded on Starbucks gift cards. This money can be used as upfront revenue before even a single product is purchased– which is eventually a liability if a customer chooses to redeem their card, but many people never spend all the money loaded onto a gift card. In 2019, Starbucks reported $125 million in breakage income (the revenue gained by unredeemed gift cards).  At the end of 2021, Starbucks was holding 2.4 billion dollars in cash uploaded to gift cards by customers. This exceeds the deposits in a number of American banks. In fact, Starbucks can invest cash from their gift cards in a way very similar to how banks manage their deposits. In other words, customers are lending money to Starbucks at 0% interest when they top up a card. And since Starbucks is not a bank legally, it can bypass [2] financial mandates including the fractional reserve requirement as Starbucks’ balance cannot be withdrawn easily. The analogy is, if customers withdraw cash from their normal bank accounts, they “withdraw” Starbucks drinks from their gift cards.  A key moment that allowed Starbucks to operate like a sort of bank happened in 2019 when they launched their mobile app. At the end of 2021, nearly a quarter of US transactions were mobile orders, many of which were fulfilled through virtual Starbucks cards. In the US, Starbucks had the most mobile payment users until Apple Pay surpassed Starbucks in recent years. In 2021, Apple Pay had 43.9 million users and Starbucks came second with 31.2 million users in the US– but this is an impressive feat given that making payments to a wide range of retailers is possible with Apple Pay whereas the Starbucks payment app gives users only one choice.   Industry experts are identifying Starbucks as a potential competitor to traditional banks. With the amount of virtual money Starbucks holds, it could easily step in and provide a service that looks an awful lot like banking. Banks have been facing competition from non-banks such as Amazon and Alibaba since the tail end of 2008 recession, as Wayne Busch and Juan Pedro Moreno wrote in Harvard Business Review: “As banks recover from the downturn, non-banks are taking advantage by proceeding aggressively with digital innovations and capturing more and more of the banking value chain.” Jung Tai Kim, the head of South Korean bank Hana Financial Group stated in a press conference, “Starbucks, powered by technology, has become our rival… It is more than just a coffee house. It’s an unregulated bank.” The Starbucks app was launched when not many brick-and-mortar stores had an app. A little more than a decade later, the app is boosting sales with its rewards program and convenient ways to customize and order drinks, laying a stepping stone to the financial market. In the meantime, some traditional banks are looking for ways to design an app that will embody their longstanding bureaucratic systems. Might Starbucks one day replace your bank?
