Coral reefs are expansive ecosystems found in coastal regions around the world. Contrary to popular belief, coral reefs are formed by animals, not plants. These tiny animals are called coral polyps and are loosely related to jellyfish and anemones. The formation of coral reef structures throughout the globe is dependent on the symbiotic [1] relationship that exists between these coral polyps and a certain species of algae. The polyps provide shelter for the algae to live in, whilst the algae provide as much as 90% of the total food energy required by the coral polyps.  As well as being incredibly beautiful, comprising an array of striking colors, coral reefs are exceptionally important to both animals and humans. In terms of biodiversity, despite covering only 0.1% of the ocean floor, coral reefs are home to around 25% of all marine life; including over 4,000 species of fish. This value is emphasized by the fact that coral reef ecosystems sustain a higher biodiversity than tropical rainforests. Meanwhile, the Office for Coastal Management estimates that over 500 million people around the world rely on coral reefs for food and income. In addition to these biological and economic factors, coral reefs are also significant for environmental reasons, playing a crucial role in coastal protection. With coral reefs being able to reduce wave energy by as much as 97%, they act as natural barriers to coastal erosion and storm damage.  The optimal conditions for coral reefs include warm ocean temperatures between 23-29ºC (73-84ºF) and plenty of sunlight. This means coral reefs rarely grow in water deeper than 50m, where there isn’t enough sunlight. Owing to these parameters, coral reefs are under serious threat from climate change. Temperatures in shallow waters in the ocean are warming, and the upper limits of a temperature in which coral reefs can survive are being breached. These conditions lead to coral bleaching events wherein stressed coral polyps expel [2] the algae and lose their main source of nutrients and die, causing the reefs to turn white. Unfortunately, widespread coral bleaching in the 21st century led to a coral reef crisis. From 2014-2017, it is believed as much as 70% of the world’s coral reefs were damaged by coral bleaching. In 2016 alone, 29% of the Great Barrier Reef’s shallow-water corals were killed.  However, all hope is not lost, for “necessity is the mother of invention,” in the words of Ester Boserup. With impending [3] habitat destruction, the global community has rallied to deploy multiple strategies against coral reef destruction, the most innovative one of which is coral propagation [4]. As many corals can reproduce asexually, small fragments can be cut from healthy reefs and be used to start new colonies. Using this technique, corals with certain desirable traits, such as resistance to high ocean temperatures, can be selected and reproduced. Indeed, some coral species are known to survive up to 35ºC! There has been promising evidence in the Gulf of Aqaba in the Red Sea too, where reefs have remained stubborn despite temperature increases of 7ºC. The propagation technique has so far proven promising as a vital lifeline for the battle against coral reef crisis. However, only time will tell whether this technique will be sufficient.

산호초는 전세계 여러 해안지역에 광범위하게 퍼져 있는 생태계입니다. 흔히 생각하는 것과는 달리 산호초는 식물이 아니라 동물로 이루어져 있습니다. 이 아주 작은 동물들은 산호폴립(산호충)이라고 불리며 해파리나 말미잘과 먼 동족관계에 있습니다. 지구 전역에 퍼져 있는 산호초의 형성은 이 산호폴립들과 몇 가지 해조류 사이의 공생관계에 달려 있습니다. 폴립들은 해조류가 살 수 있는 안전한 장소를 제공하고 조류는 폴립들이 필요로 하는 영양분의 최고 90퍼센트까지를 제공합니다. 놀라울 정도로 아름답고, 갖가지 화려한 색깔을 자랑하는 산호초는 동물과 사람 모두에게 아주 중요합니다. 생물의 다양성 측면에서 보면, 해저의 불과 0.1퍼센트 정도만을 차지할 뿐인 산호초는 약 4천 종 이상의 물고기를 포함해서 해양생물 전체의 약 25퍼센트에게 서식지를 제공합니다. 이러한 가치는 산호초가 이루는 생태계가 열대우림보다 더 다양한 종의 생물을 가지고 있다는 사실에 의해 두드러집니다. 한편 해안관리사무국은 전세계 5억이 넘는 사람들이 식량과 소득을 산호초에 의존하고 있다고 추정합니다. 이러한 생물학적, 경제적 요소에 덧붙여, 산호초는 해안 보호에 있어서 중대한 역할을 하기 때문에 환경적인 이유에서도 중요합니다. 산호초는 파도의 에너지를 최고 97퍼센트 감소시킴으로써 해안 침식과 태풍 피해에 대한 자연적인 방패막이 역할을 합니다. 산호초 생존의 최적 조건은 섭씨 23~29도 사이의 따뜻한 해수 온도와 충분한 햇빛입니다. 이 말은 50미터보다 더 깊은 바다속에는 햇빛이 충분히 미치지 못하기 때문에 산호초가 거의 자랄 수 없다는 것을 의미합니다. 이러한 기준 한도 때문에 산호초는 기후변화의 심각한 위협을 받고 있습니다. 얕은 바다의 수온이 점차 올라서 산호초가 생존할 수 있는 온도의 상한선을 넘어서고 있는겁니다. 이러한 환경은 산호 백화현상을 일으키고 있는데, 백화현상이란 스트레스를 받은 폴립들이 공생하고 있는 해조류를 내쫓아서 영양분의 주원천을 잃고 죽게 되면서 산호초가 백색으로 변하는 것입니다. 불행히도 21세기에 광범위하게 진행된 백화현상은 산호초의 위기를 초래했습니다. 2014~2017년경부터 지금까지 전세계 산호초의 최대 70퍼센트가 백화현상의 피해를 입은 것으로 여겨집니다. 2016년 한해 동안 호주의 그레이트 배리어 리프(대보초)의 얕은 바다에 사는 산호초의 29퍼센트가 죽었습니다. 그러나 희망이 완전히 사라진 것은 아닙니다. 왜냐하면 에스더 보저럽이 말했듯이 “필요는 발명의 어머니”이니까요. 서식지 파괴가 임박하자 전세계 공동체가 단결하여 산호초 파괴를 막기 위한 다양한 전략을 마련하고 있는데 그중 가장 혁신적인 것은 바로 산호 증식입니다. 많은 산호들은 무성번식이 가능하기 때문에 건강한 산호초의 일부를 조금 떼어다가 새로운 군락을 시작하는 데 사용할 수 있습니다. 이 기술을 사용하여 어떤 원하는 특성, 예를 들어 높은 해수 온도에 잘 견디는 특성 같은 것을 가진 산호를 선별해서 증식시킬 수 있습니다. 실제로 어떤 종의 산호는 섭씨 35도에서도 생존하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 홍해 아카바만에서도 희망적인 사례를 찾을 수 있는데 그곳의 산호초는 수온이 섭씨 7도나 상승했음에도 불구하고 꿋꿋이 잘 버티고 있습니다. 이제까지 증식기술은 산호초 위기에 맞서 싸우는 데 필수적인 생명선으로서 가망이 있는 것으로 입증되었습니다. 그러나 이 기술만으로 충분할지는 시간이 지나봐야 알 수 있을 것입니다.
