While reading in our native language usually comes with ease, for many reading in a learned language is tedious, slow, and often frustrating. If you have to learn a new writing system, it can be even worse. But, reading is more than just the mastery of a writing system or remembering a lot of vocabulary and grammar. It’s your brain’s ability to recognize abstract forms and shapes to associate concrete ideas and concepts (If you’re interested in learning more, check out Part 1 of this topic). Here, you are trying to get every last bit of information out of a text, reading it sentence by sentence and occasionally even jumping back and forth between ideas.</li></ol> <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(13, 13, 13); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Oftentimes, particularly at work or in school situations, choosing the right mode of reading can have a significant impact. After all, if you read a text closely but only need the general gist of it, you might feel extremely slow. Conversely, if you’re skimming a text when you need a lot of detail from it, you might feel that your comprehension is inadequate.<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(13, 13, 13); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">	<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(13, 13, 13); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Improving reading comprehension<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(13, 13, 13); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Reading comprehension depends to a large degree on your vocabulary and grammar knowledge. That is not to say that you should go out and buy a book listing the 1,000 most common words and grammar forms in English writing. Although you can do that, developing a personalized catalog of phrases and expressions may be a more effective way to do it. Draw from the materials that you want to read and highlight expressions and phrases you don’t understand. When you have a quiet minute and a dictionary, or a class with your tutor, try to interpret those materials and check your understanding. Write the whole phrase (and maybe one or two examples you’ve come up with yourself) in a vocabulary diary and review this regularly. <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(13, 13, 13); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">It is crucial that you don’t write down abstract grammar rules but concrete phrases that use grammar as you find them in your texts. The human brain doesn’t process language like <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(13, 13, 13); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">arithmetic [2]<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(13, 13, 13); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> rules but as recurring patterns that depend on meaningful context. <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(13, 13, 13); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Improving reading speed<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(13, 13, 13); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">When we read, our eyes jump rapidly across the page in small erratic movements called saccades. We don’t process letter-for-letter or even word-for-word. Rather, we recognize longer chunks of language. Of course, most language learners often still tend to read word for word, so to increase your overall reading speed, you have to train your brain to process more words per saccade. <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(13, 13, 13); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">To do so, actively force yourself to always look at two words at a time instead of just one (extremely long words are an exception). In English, you can try to look at the space between words and you will notice that you can still read them. Although you might feel like this is initially slower than your normal reading speed, give it a few repetitions and always try to decrease the time you spend looking at one pair of words. Once you feel comfortable with two words at once, try to go for three or even four words. Advanced readers sometimes jump between groups of as many as six words. <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(13, 13, 13); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Lastly, it is important not to forget that reading is a skill. If you feel like you forget the meaning of a specific phrase or expression even though it pops up regularly in your reading, review it again and add another example sentence to your catalog. If you feel like you don’t actually understand the text when looking at two words at once, give yourself more time staring at one pair of words until you feel you’ve fully grasped it.  <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(13, 13, 13); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Learning a language should be a life-long process. So, more than anything, try to be patient with yourself and trust the process. As long as you’re practicing consciously and regularly, you are sure to improve.
