Tech’s Impact on Your Brain

Our lives are <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">tethered [1] to—or consumed by—digital technology; we stare at glowy rectangles for hours every day, wading knee-deep in the abundance of thoughts, dreams, and hopes in search of our livelihoods and entertainment. Smartphones, computers, and tablets, among many other gadgets, have become inseparable from modern life as we know it; and tech companies such as Google, Twitter, and Apple vie for our attention by strategically pressing certain psychological buttons to make us come back for more.  In 2008, Nicholas Carr wrote for the <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Atlantic, “Immersing myself in a book or a lengthy article used to be easy … Now my concentration starts to drift after two or three pages. I get fidgety, lose thread, begin looking for something else to do.” His article, much like its title, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?,” suspected that digital media was shifting our brain. Over the years, similar <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">grievances [2] have been launched against digital devices and the internet.  In fact, neuroscientist Manfred Spitzer coined the term “digital dementia,” referring to the cognitive breakdown caused by overuse on digital devices. Dementia is usually associated with brain damage, but Spitzer proposed that short-term memory pathways deteriorate as you outsource your memory to technology. However, his claim was met by <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">backlash [3] in the scientific community for lack of evidence. The mental disarray implied by “dementia” is far more complete and<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> pernicious [4] compared to mere underuse of short-term memory.  Indeed, if digital technology can permanently change our brain for the worse, leaving us scatterbrained and more prone to memory lapses, we are going through a fundamental transformation of human cognition. But the jury is still out—although studies have shown a correlation between social media usage and problems with thinking, causality remains elusive.  The idea that we are becoming "dumber" comes in part from the fact that digital media distracts us. A new Tweet or a message from a friend acts like a treat for the brain. We constantly check updates on social media by refreshing the page, which is analogous to pulling the crank of a slot machine. By some measure, on average we receive 63 notifications a day and switch tasks every three minutes. Attention is a limited resource, and the myth of effective multitasking is in fact rapidly ping-ponging between different tasks.  Exercising our cognitive capacities is important to combat the pervasive effects of distractions. In one study, a group that checked their emails throughout the day reported higher levels of stress and anxiety than the other group that checked them in batches. Turning off non-human notifications and tracking your screen time can be a meaningful first step towards a healthier relationship with technology.
