완벽한 인간의 조건

No, we now have discrimination down to a science,” remarks Vincent Freeman (played by Ethan Hawke). Vincent is a man who dreams of going to space, but in the world of Gattaca, a future where children’s lives are spelled out and predetermined by genetics at (and prior to) birth, he is someone born “naturally,” through a “faith-birth,” and thus is deemed “invalid” by society. Genetic discrimination rules this new <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">dystopian [1]  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">world, and despite it being illegal in theory, it’s unstoppable in practice.  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">As a child, Vincent and his brother, Anton, who is engineered (a “valid”) would play a game of “chicken,” which entails swimming out to sea as far as each dared. Vincent, being the weaker brother, would lose again and again, being the first to pull away and turn back to shore. Anton and those around him mock Vincent’s dreams of one day becoming an astronaut at Gattaca Aerospace Corporation, remarking that at best, he’ll only ever be a janitor. <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">And work as a janitor Vincent does, cleaning the office of his dreams after hours, never missing  an opportunity to gaze towards the stars during a rocket launch, a regular event that has quickly become <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">mundane [2] <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">to most who work at Gattaca. As opportunity has it, Vincent meets Jerome Morrow, an engineered swimmer who was injured abroad, and is now wheel-chair bound. Morrow agrees to let Vincent take on his identity. <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">On its surface, Gattaca is a classic story of science fiction, exploring limits on the advancement of human technology. It raises important questions on the <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">ethics [3] <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">of genetic engineering and manipulation. But, at its heart, Gattaca tells a tale of brothers and the nature of belonging. Vincent, a character who admits he was “never meant for this world” fights desperately for a place within it, standing in contrast to Jerome, who despite being engineered for perfection, suffers under the very weight of its expectations.  <span style="font-family:Georgia;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Towards the end of the story, having made his way in the world as someone else, Vincent has an opportunity to revisit his childhood, to once more compete with his brother in their game of “chicken.” As they swim out to the sea, Vincent feels his brother attempting to pull away, again and again, until his brother warns that they’re too far out. “How are you doing this?” Anton asks, to which Vincent replies: “You want to know how I did it? This is how I did it, Anton: I never saved anything for the swim back.”
