If you have ever worked with a consultant or considered becoming one, you have probably heard a good deal about what the profession <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">entails [1]. You might have even heard horror stories about working in consulting, including anecdotes of the infamous 100-hour workweek. In today’s article, we will explore what it means to be a strategy consultant.  Strategy consultants, also known as consultants, specialize in identifying and solving major management issues in a company. Typically, they work on a project-by-project basis, and in each project, a team of four to six collaborate with a client for six to eight weeks. Their problem-solving begins with establishing whether the client’s perceived problems exist, and if so, where those problems originate and how to solve them. Findings are then presented with evidence to the board of the company. In short, a consultant’s role is to point out the issues and problems of the company and provide solutions. On their day-to-day, consultants interact with veteran executives who have been working in a given field for decades. They are to notice their blind spots, to reveal weaknesses<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> overlooked [2] by those who have become too familiar with a field.  If getting to do substantive work is the exciting side of consulting, the tough side is that this role will push you to your limits, both mentally and physically. Beyond intense working hours, consultants are often tasked with incredibly vague and complex problems, and comprehensive solutions which are satisfying to managers and customers alike are elusive. Only upon discovering a solution might a consultant discover its limitations. On the other hand, there is no other occupation better than consulting that helps develop strategic skills in a short period of time. Especially among entry-level positions, consulting is almost <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">unmatched [3] when it comes to the opportunity it provides to directly access high-level executives and research resources. Therefore, having consulting experience can increase one’s value to employers.  So far, we have explored the basics of being a consultant, but what does it take to be a <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">good consultant? Evaluation criteria used by consulting firms might give us an idea.  First and foremost, a competent consultant should be able to solve problems. As simple as it sounds, this entails the ability to manage different moving parts while not losing sight of the forest for the trees, and providing the needed insight at the right time. However challenging, this complex process is at the heart of consulting —and the moment you lose sight of it, you can’t call yourself a consultant.  Second, excellent communication skills are key. Whatever information you hold, without proper communication, will be rendered useless. To make a point about good decision-making, you need a narrative to persuade others. Moreover, since your narrative is delivered by way of presentation, your slide deck should be easy to follow, and good stage presence is important. Finally, being a team worker can never be overemphasized. Needless to say, without problem-solving and communication skills, being a team player alone won’t make you stand out. However, with a baseline of competence, a positive, encouraging, and eager attitude can <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">go a long way [4]. <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">How do consultants work? The problem-solving approach that consulting companies emphasize the most is a hypothesis-based approach, in which a list of mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive hypotheses are checked off. It is important that all but the most plausible hypotheses are ruled out; to this end, a number of frameworks, such as the BCG Growth-Share Matrix or 3G model, are used.   The most uncanny thing for ordinary people when they first become a consultant or when they work with a consultant is the order in which work is performed. They spend a lot of time building the hypotheses and then start researching or viewing data. How is it possible to imagine a hypothesis that defines and solves a company's problems? Well, while it’s not a guarantee, over time, you’ll quickly realize that it is always much more efficient to start from a hypothesis because it makes clear the immediate next steps to take. Planning what to do and how it could be achieved is key to this hypothesis-based approach.  Unfortunately yet obviously, there are times when you run out of hypotheses and still don't have an answer to the problem. But once you've gone through the process, you can get an intuition of what the answer could be. The most helpful part of this process is the insight of professionals who have a deep understanding of the field and partners who are experts at pattern recognition. If the initial direction had been right, you can get more sleep and still come up with a solution. The experience of solution-seeking under pressure while sleep-deprived leaves you with a work ethic that will stay with you for the rest of your life.  <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">What are the disadvantages of this job? Identifying problems and answering them in a short time. Each consultant in a team is responsible for their own module, and as such, must take full responsibility for it. That means, any issues that arise must be taken on by the consultant alone. This translates to working hours that are long, sometimes unpredictably so. Of course, having to show the client company that you're working to the limit doesn't help. The clients themselves work under tight schedules, which puts more pressure on consultants. Consultants are paid well annually, but after taking into account the hours they work, it’s not clear whether their hourly wage is sufficient.  Working in this environment, of course, results in physical and psychological problems. Of course, should you fall ill, the company has you covered with good insurance. But the total amount of physical strength that you can use during your lifespan is limited, and there is a high possibility that you will run into health issues in the future because you've used up a lot in advance. So, among strategy consultants, there is a joke that you need to start out young to become a partner. Everyone is good at what they do, but in the end, those who make it to the manager position (where you can get a little more sleep) are those that have gained a lot of experience from having survived the extreme working environment.  Finally, getting used to the rhythm and intensity of working in a consulting firm can be a disadvantage rather than an advantage. The biggest mistake that former consultants make when they leave the consulting industry is pushing their team too much; they think that people who work at other companies will work as hard as consultants. And, unfortunately, there are a lot of people who keep pushing themselves. This attitude can make life painful.  Only a small number of people have this job for life. It may vary from company to company, but the average consultant turnover is under 2.5 years. There are a few people who have worked for more than 10 years, but there are many who leave on their own within a year or two. However, this period is also the time when you learn the most in the shortest time frame. All in all, you might look at consultant work as a drain on one’s health in exchange for a comfortable, safe career.
