Overcoming Jet Lag

For the crickets of the world, the setting of the sun signals the beginning of their adventures. Humans, unlike crickets, are “diurnal” creatures, meaning they’re usually active during the day. As the noise of crickets subside to the morning light, many people begin to <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">stir [1] and prepare for the day ahead. These cycles of awakeness and sleep are dictated by what is referred to as <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">circadian rhythm, otherwise known as the biological clock. Circadian rhythm refers to the natural sleep-wake cycle of different animals, plants, and even fungi—it encompasses physical and physiological changes that <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">align [2] with certain points of the cycle. For humans, as the day draws to a close, increases in melatonin (a hormone associated with sleep) are triggered and sleepiness follows. Of course, exposure to certain kinds of light, noise, and stimuli can be disruptive. This is why studies recommend less exposure to blue light (a kind of light that comes from computer and cell phone screens) prior to sleeping.  Circadian rhythms can be disrupted by ways other than light, however. The most common and significant disruption is a process commonly referred to as jet lag. Jet lag as a term describes the physical and emotional manifestations of long-distance travel across several time zones. After a long-haul flight, travelers may experience fatigue, headache, light sensitivity, concentration issues, and even digestive problems.  There are some cures for jet lag, although nothing other than time is a catch-all. A good rule of thumb is that the estimated time to adjust to a new time zone is equal to the number of time zones traveled in days; that is to say, a flight across seven time zones means recovery will take approximately seven days. Of course, small flights over just an hour or two may feel almost completely <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">negligible [3].  The most traditional method of adjustment is simply to “do as the Romans do,” in this case, eat at hours in accordance with your new time zone, get lots of sun, and sleep only once the sun sets.
