Netflix CEO Reed Hastings mentioned several times in the past that he has no strategic interest in advertising. “There’s not easy money there,” Hastings said when he was asked on the subject during the company’s fourth quarter 2019 earnings interview. That position seems to have changed. Netflix is launching its first “Basic with ads” tier in November 2022. The decision came after the company lost 1.2 million streamers in the first half of 2022, and their growth <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">plateaued [1] around the same time.  Netflix’s ad-supported plan will include four to five ads, each 15 to 30 seconds long, per hour and will limit users’ access to listings on the catalog due to licensing restrictions. The ad tier became available in Canada and Mexico on November 1, followed by the US, South Korea, Japan, and some European countries on November 3.  In a media conference call, Netflix stated that it will have “hundreds of advertisers at launch and has nearly sold out its inventory,” according to CNBC. However, it is unclear whether the eagerness of advertisers will meet a similar reaction from the market. The streaming company will charge $6.99 a month in the US for the ad-supported plan and £4.99 in the UK. While this is less expensive than advertising tiers of Disney+ or Hulu, it is questionable whether the three-dollar discount from Netflix’s ad-free basic plan, which charges $9.99, will be attractive to consumers. YouTube Premium, which allows users to stream ad-free, even when the screen is locked, is $11.99 a month, signaling a willingness of consumers to pay not an <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">insubstantial [2] amount to<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> do away with ads. In other words, ads can feel that much cumbersome. And the question is, Will $6.99 generate enough signups?  The performance of Netflix’s ad tier will be important for its future. Although the company bounced back up in the third quarter, adding 2.41 million subscribers and exceeding internal forecasts and expectations on Wall Street, it is undeniably not growing as it was. Moreover, the soaring dollar presents a big challenge. But perhaps what they should be looking at for comparison is not subscribers of a $15 Standard or $20 Premium plan, but those who are not willing to pay that much for streaming to begin with.
