If there was, for any reason, concern that Generation Z was not completely digital, then its successor, Generation Alpha, is here to <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">quell [1] those doubts. Born in the early 2010s, Generation Alpha is the latest age demographic that will define an era. While some Zoomers may remember a time without so much technology, Alphas cannot; starting with the iPhone 4, a new Apple phone has been released every year of their lives. Such a fact <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">defines [2] their existence—in a completely digital age, a reported 90% of Alphas had used a handheld electronic device by the time they were 1 year old. The use of streaming services, rather than cable television, and online connections are also higher among the latest generation. There’s still a lot that we don’t know about Generation Alpha, though, and we won’t know for some time. The social, educational, and emotional effects of the pandemic on our youth, for instance, will continue to <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">materialize [3] across the <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">foreseeable [4] future. We do know, however, that this generation will need to support an aging population; by the 2030s, there will be some two billion Alphas, while the world will have its greatest proportion of people over the age of 60. As their parents age, and they navigate the increasingly complex global socioeconomic network, Generation Alpha will likely delay major life events like marriage, home buying, childbirth, and retirement, as previous generations have. If you think that generational markers—like Zoomers, Millenials, and Boomers—are more prevalent than before, you’d be correct. The rise of Generation Alpha came about 13 years after the first Gen Zers were born. Conversely, Gen Z came about 16 years after the first Millennials, and Generation X came 19 years after the Boomers. The shortening distance between the start and end of a single generation is due to the proliferation of massive, global changes in technology, politics, civil society, and more.  Where Generation X had the Cold War, Millennials had neoliberalism and the Gulf War; where Gen Z had the September 11 attacks and the first smartphone, Generation Alpha <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-style: italic; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">has COVID and the War in Ukraine.  It seems Alpha has lived a lifetime given how much they’ve already experienced and witnessed; indeed, they’ve only lived 12 years, at the most. Perhaps their life events will create a truly resilient generation, one capable of solving the immense issues humanity faces in the coming years. We’ll have to wait to find out.
