ChatGPT is OpenAI’s AI chatbot that went viral after its release in late November 2022. The chatbot can write essays, poems, and give direct, conversational answers to just about any user query. ChatGPT uses available data found online to provide conversational answers to queries. It uses an artificial intelligence language model to generate human-like text. Unlike Google Search, which provides links to websites they think are relevant, ChatGPT delivers direct answers in a human-like voice.  Amid mounting<span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> fears over competitive alternatives to Google Search, the ChatGPT-hype added fuel to the fire. However, Google has been experimenting with its own AI chatbot called LaMDA for years, which is powered by Natural Language Processing (NLP), the technology underpinning ChatGPT. It’s just that Google hasn’t officially rolled out LaMDA, despite the competitive pressure to reinvent itself and stay relevant. But there are reasons for this rigidity in today’s fast-changing environment.  Over the past two decades, advertising has become Google’s main revenue source and remains its parent company Alphabet’s flagship product. To grossly simplify, if Google Search were to use an AI chatbot to provide intuitive answers, this would take away the spotlight from sponsored results that usually show up at the top of search results. Moreover, since Google’s ad revenue through third-party websites depends on generating high web traffic, if users could get everything they need without clicking on different websites to synthesize information themselves, companies wouldn’t be incentivized to buy ad space on those websites.  A more <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">damning [4] prospect of Google’s introducing LaMDA or other AI chatbots is that Google has more to lose when things go wrong. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has made it clear that ChatGPT can provide incorrect or misleading information. While Google Search’s current model may show links to websites that contain misleading or hateful information, they can still distance themselves from those sources and delegate the role of assessing and processing information to the user. A racist joke delivered through Google’s own voice is a problem of a whole different magnitude.  In order to stay relevant, Google will have to show investors that it can effectively innovate in the AI sector while maintaining its major cash cow: its advertising business. At a recent all-hands meeting at Google, the Head of Google’s AI division Jeff Dean said, “We are absolutely looking to get these things out into real products and into things that are more prominently featuring the language model.” CEO Sundar Pichai corroborated this point by adding that he sees the coming year (2023) as an inflection point for how AI is applied in Google’s search business.
