As people, each of us has something unique to give. Our individual experiences, identities, and ideas provide us with distinct perspectives that contribute to humanity’s collective understanding of the world. That is why, over the past few decades and especially the previous few years, there have been major pushes to diversify human spaces, especially the workplace. As more countries and companies acknowledge this fact, several have <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">enacted [1] laws and policies to not only protect, but also promote, workplace diversity. In the US, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits employers in the United States from discriminating against employees based on sex, race, national origin, or sexual orientation. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act, additionally, <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">forbids [2] workplace discrimination against workers over 40 years of age.  Indeed, strong diversity is a <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">resounding [3] positive for workplaces culturally, creatively, and financially, as diverse offices are 35% more likely to experience better financial gains than non-diverse ones, according to McKinsey & Company. Also, most CEOs say that creativity is their most valued skill among their employees, and diversity naturally promotes creativity. If people from various backgrounds get a seat at the table, they can offer multiple solutions or ideas to pressing issues, leading to more corporate innovation. What’s more, decision-making by diverse teams is more effective than individual decision-making some 87% of the time, according to Washington State University.  Millennials and Generation Z also report workplace diversity and multiculturalism are critical in their job search, as they <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">associate diverse companies <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">with [4] relatability, cultural awareness and diffusion, and better career and personal development. Customers feel similarly—marketing that features diverse people creates a better reputation for the company than non-diverse advertising, and clients feel that the company is more accessible. Humans are special, and it’s critical to remember that even as bad news dominates the headlines. Perhaps the greatest reminder of this fact is diverse workplaces, as they bring together people of different backgrounds, cultures, and skills to solve problems creatively.
