How Weather Impacts Mood

Have you ever noticed that it’s harder to wake up for school in the morning during the winter than during the fall or spring? Or that you generally have less energy throughout the day when it’s cloudy or rainy than when it’s bright sunshine? If so, it’s not just your mind playing tricks on you but instead, the rainy day <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">blues [1]. The weather has been shown to impact our moods in positive and negative ways depending on what’s going on outside. For instance, when it’s cold, dark, or rainy outside, our bodies tell us that it’s time to hibernate, much like a bear, meaning we have less energy to use throughout the day. On the other hand, a long, sunny day keeps us energized and even improves things like memory and focus, which is why we can play outside during the summer for basically the whole day.  Depending on where you live, different types of weather will have different effects on your mood. For example, if you live in a very dry place, then a light rain or cool breeze would be a <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">welcomed [2] change of pace, whereas if you live in a typically wet area, more rain won’t change how you’re feeling to a great degree.   Also, some peoples’ moods do not change that much when exposed to different weather patterns, regardless of where they live. However, there’s enough evidence that ties weather to emotions, and organizes people into four general categories: summer lovers, summer haters, rain haters, and unaffected.  So, when someone says that they are “under the weather,” or comments that you have “a sunny <span style="12pt; font-family: Georgia; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">disposition [3],” you’ll know that these expressions come from the weather’s effects on human emotion.
